RAFAEL CORONEL
PLASTIC ARTIST
Born in 1931, master Rafael Coronel has been considered one of the most defined representatives of New Mexican Expressionism. His interest in human nature has led him to capture it and make it susceptible to transformation in plastic form. He has exhibited on five continents, highlighting the VII São Paulo Biennial, in which he obtained the Córdoba Prize for the best young Latin American painter, and the I International Biennial of Figurative Painting in Osaka, Japan, in which he received the First Prize (1974). He is the only living artist who has exhibited four times at the Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts and in addition to having received several awards, his work is part of important collections and museums around the world. His artistic work earned him that the Government of Mexico has donated a space for the museum that bears his name in the city of Zacatecas.
Master Coronel represents in his work the philosophy of life with honesty and humanity. Younger brother of Pedro Coronel, Rafael Coronel felt artistic inclinations from a very young age. After studying at the National School of Painting and Sculpture «La Esmeralda», he soon developed a very unique artistic language. His painting resorts to popular themes, however it could not be said in any way that his treatments and solutions are the product of the spontaneous or gratuitous. The vocation of painter was something that Rafael brought from family. His grandfather decorated churches and drew the garlands that adorned the walls.
When his father told him that Pedro, his brother, was studying painting in Mexico, he was told one of the biggest wastes of time and a great nonsense that had happened in his family. At that time young painters did not eat paint; nor the old ones, who in addition to painting, had to teach in the academies.
JUAN CARLOS VILLEGAS
PLASTIC ARTIST
Born on November 5, 1971 in Potrero de Gallegos, Valparaíso, Zacatecas. Since 1992, he began his painting studies at the Plastic Arts Workshop of the Autonomous University of Zacatecas, Mexico. That same year he entered the Julio Ruelas Painting and Engraving Workshop, in the same city. He received an Honorable Mention at the Francisco de Santiago State Painting Salon in 1995. A scholarship holder from the State Fund for Culture and the Arts, Young Creators category, in 1996. First Prize in the Zacatecas 450th Anniversary Regional Painting Hall, in 1996. He was selected in the First Juan Manuel de la Rosa State Painting Hall, in 2002; at the VI Diego Rivera National Biennial, Guanajuato, in 2004; and in the Second Pedro Coronel Biennial of Painting, Zacatecas, in 2010. He has exhibited individually in Zacatecas in spaces such as the Arroyo de la Plata Gallery, the French Alliance, the NIC, the Sala Gallery, the Municipal House of Culture, the Zacatecano Museum and in the Citadel of Art (together with Alejandro Nava); and in San Luis Potosí, the Mariano Jiménez Museum. Abroad, he exhibited in 2013, “Imaginario/Imaginaire”, and “Gravures de Juan Carlos Villegas”, in Besançon, France; and in 2016, «Onironautas», in San Piero Patti, Sicily, Italy. In 2017 he participated in the collection «Love seen by art», a project of the Grupo Milenio Foundation; and made a mural for the city of San Piero Patti, in Sicily. He has participated in more than 60 collective exhibitions in different states of the country, the United States and Europe. In 2018, he participated in the collective exhibition of Zacatecan artists at the XIII FEMSA Biennial and recently, in 2019, he was a jury member at the Pedro Coronel Biennial.
JAVIER MARIN
PLASTIC ARTIST
Mexican artist, born in Uruapan, Michoacán (1962), with an active career that exceeds thirty years, has exhibited individually on more than ninety occasions and has participated in more than two hundred collective exhibitions in Mexico, the United States and Canada, as well as as in several countries of Central America, South America, Asia and Europe.
Javier Marín’s work revolves around the integral human being, using the analysis of the creative process from the construction and de-construction of three-dimensional forms, taking sculpture and now including drawing and photography as central disciplines.
Some of his exhibitions have been held in spaces such as Place du Louvre, in Paris (2018), The San Diego Museum of Art in California (2018), the MUDEC Museo delle Culture in Milan (2018), the Pinacoteca Comunale Casa Rusca , in Locarno, Switzerland (2016), the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma Testaccio, in Rome (2013-2014), Les Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, in Brussels (2010), the Museo di Palazzo Reale, in Milan (2008-2009), the Bass Museum of Art, in Miami Beach (2006-2007), the Colonial Museum and the Santa Clara Museum, both in Bogotá (2006), the Museum of Contemporary Art of Oaxaca (2006), the Museum Amparo, in Puebla (2005), the Espace Pierre Cardin, in Paris (2000), the Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts, in Mexico City (1996), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Monterrey, Mexico (1993) and the Álvar and Carmen T. de Carrillo Gil Art Museum, in Mexico City (1990), among many others. As a review of the thirty years of his career, the Corpus Terra exhibition was presented at the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso and at the Palacio de Iturbide, in Mexico City (2015-2016).
His work is part of important public and private collections in Mexico and abroad, among them: the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, in Mexico City, the Museum of Contemporary Art Monterrey, the Museo del Barro, in Caracas, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, in California, the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston, the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the Latin American Museum, in Florida, the Blake-Purnell Collection, in New York, the Costantini Collection of the Museum of Latin American Art in Buenos Aires, the Ersel Collection, in Turin, and the Art Collection of the Prince of Monaco.
Likewise, he has carried out projects and shows in public spaces, such as Lange Voorhout Square, in The Hague (2010), Piazza del Duomo, Chiesa e Chiostro di Sant’Agostino, in Pietrasanta (2008), Casa de América, in Madrid (2007), the Convent of San Francisco de Asís, in Havana (2006), the Plaza Juárez and the former Temple of Corpus Christi, in Mexico City (2005), the Church of Santa Catarina, in Lithuania (2003 ), the Espace Bellevue, in Biarritz (2001), and the Casa de América in Madrid, on the main façade of which he created the monumental piece Chalchihuites (2008).
He has been invited to leading international events, such as the Exhibition for the World Art Treasures, opening exhibition of the China Art Museum, Shanghai (2012); In addition, his work has been exhibited twice during the Venice Biennale: in Larga Ascensione at the entrance of Piazza de San Marco, in the 49th edition (2001), and in the Sala Santo Tommaso, Campo dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, in issue 50 (2003).
Javier Marín has received various awards and distinctions, including the First Prize at the Third International Biennial of Beijing (2008) and the competition for the main altarpiece and the presbytery of the Basilica Cathedral of Zacatecas (2010). In recognition of his traveling exhibition De 3 en 3, which toured seven European cities (Pietrasanta, Milan, The Hague, Brussels, La Baule-Escoublac, Luxembourg and Rome), the Queen of the Netherlands awarded him the title of Knight of the Order from Orange-Nassau (2009).

Juan Francisco Rodríguez Montoya, known as Juan Soriano, was a Mexican plastic artist called «El Mozart de la Pintura», because from an early age he showed great aptitude for plastic creation. Recognized as one of the most important and prolific Mexican plastic artists, both in the country and abroad, his work can be seen in different spaces and collections around the world.
His career began its internationalization in 1945, with collective exhibitions in New York and Philadelphia, the same years in which he wrote the libretto for «The Bird and the Maidens», together with Diego de Mesa, and collaborated on the magazine «The Son prodigal». In 1950 he received the First Prize at the Winter Salon and between 1951 and 1953 he stayed in Italy, where he made terracotta and ceramics, as well as illustrations for the book tribute to Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, edited by Juan José Arreola in the The Presents collection. In 1956, after the creation of the Poesía en Voz Alta group, Soriano designed sets and costumes in the company of Paz, Leonora Carrington, León Felipe and José Luis Ibáñez, among others.
That same year he completed a long list of exhibitions in Europe. In 1957 he received the José Clemente Orozco Prize, awarded by the government of Jalisco; the following year he exhibited at the Ateneo Español de México and at the Ruthermore Gallery in San Francisco, California and, in 1959, he celebrated 25 years of pictorial work with an exhibition at the Museo de Arte Moderno de México. That year he also published his essay “Abstract Art” and opened an exhibition of ceramics at the Antonio Souza gallery. In the following years, he continued with his academic work and design of sets and costumes for Poesía en Voz Alta and dance productions, a task that was recognized in 1963 with the exhibition «Juan Soriano y el Teatro» at Casa del Lago, the same year. in which, on his way back from Yucatan, he suffered a car accident together with Juan García Ponce, which motivated him to paint “The Accident”. It was three years later that he held a major exhibition of his sculptures at the Palace of Fine Arts and in 1967 he illustrated «The Bestiary» by Guillaume Apollinaire.
Two years later he began a new artistic stay in Italy. In 1975, Soriano moved to Paris, where he befriended Antonio Saura, Julio Cortázar, Milan Kundera and Valerio Adami, as well as meeting Pedro Coronel and Alberto Gironella, who lived in the City of Light. So he combined his residence between France and Mexico. A year later he won the Special Prize at the VIII International Painting Festival of Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, and a couple of years later he obtained a scholarship to support distinguished painters from the Televisa Cultural Foundation; In 1980, he produced a folder with 32 serigraphs for the book «The Only Argument», with text by Sergio Pitol. In 1984, he obtained the Gold Medal for Excellence from the Cabañas Cultural Institute, and the following year he celebrated 50 years of creation with an exhibition at the Palace of Fine Arts, which was later staged in other cities in the country.
1987 was a year full of recognition: he won the National Art Award in Mexico; France named him Knight of Arts and Letters and he won the Jalisco Art Prize, in addition to making his sculpture «Toro», mounted in Villahermosa. In 1990 he received tributes for his seven decades of life and three years later his monumental sculpture «Luna» was placed in the National Auditorium. Later his exhibition «Juan Soriano, 50 years of graphics» toured several cities in the United States. In 1997 the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, in Madrid, mounted a major retrospective of his work from 1993 to that year, which included painting, sculpture and graphics. The following year, “Juan Soriano, a thousand-year-old boy” by Elena Poniatowska appeared.
In the year 2000, an exhibition of 10 sculptures was mounted in the zocalo of Mexico City to celebrate his 80 years of life and the Rufino Tamayo International Contemporary Art Museum dedicated a tribute show to him. His activity and exhibitions of his work were not they ceased in the following years, as well as the recognition of his work, the same in Mexico as in other countries; among the last ones he received is the receipt of the degree of Officer of the Legion of Honor by the French government in 2004. That year the Juan Soriano and Marek Keller Foundation was created, and the following year several activities were carried out with which he celebrated his 85 years of life. Among them, he received the Velázquez Prize for Plastic Arts from Spain and the Commemorative Medal in Gold from the Palace of Fine Arts. In January 2006, Juan Soriano received the Order of Merit decoration from the Polish government and on the following February 10 he died in Mexico.
ALFONSO LÓPEZ MONREAL

His career originates from the Zacatecano Institute of Fine Arts, where he takes drawing, painting, engraving and modeling classes; here begins the learning and development of his artistic sensibility. In his youth he worked in the Pascual Fort workshop, printing for Catalan artists such as Joan Miró, among others. He began studying architecture in Guanajuato and abandoned his career to start his adventure around the world; He went to San Francisco, California and from there to Paris where he worked for several years in graphic workshops. He emigrated to Barcelona and worked with Tapies and Joan Hernández Pijuan, to join the Pascual Fort workshop, who became his second father. He taught classes at the Massana school in Barcelona. He is a life member of the Irish Academy of Arts. He establishes an engraving workshop with Albert Reig and teaches at the Massana school in that city (1978-1979).
In 1979 the National Institute of Fine Arts awarded him the National Award for Young Art and he participated in a collective exhibition at the Palace of Fine Arts, which was presented on an itinerant basis within the Mexican Republic, the US and Spain. He has numerous individual and collective exhibitions in Spain, Switzerland, England, Germany, Ireland, the United States and Mexico. At the same time, he received various awards and recognitions, among which are: Recognition of the Arts Council and Open Competition Award, Ireland (1988), Leo Burnett Award, México (1994), Goya Medal, Hall of Honor, X Ibero-American Biennial, Mexico (1996), life member of the Academy of Arts (2000).
He has commissioned both in Mexico and Ireland, ceramic murals, wall paintings, stained glass windows, posters, graphic work and the sculptural ensemble of «Los Conos», in Zacatecas. He is currently working on several projects in which the sculptural ensemble of the Fresnillo industrial park and the designs for the restoration of two buildings in the Historic Center of Zacatecas stand out. His work is part of public collections of various museums, foundations and cultural institutions in Mexico, Ireland, Spain and the US.
PEDRO CORONEL
PLASTIC ARTIST
Painter, sculptor, draughtsman and engraver. Brother of the Zacatecan painter Rafael Coronel. He studied painting and sculpture in La Esmeralda (1940-1945). During his stay in Paris he frequented the workshops of the painter Victor Brauner and the sculptor Constantin Brâncuşi, who greatly influenced his artistic process (1945). His first individual exhibition (1954) was at the Proteo Gallery, Mexico City, where he called the attention of the Mexican Nobel Prize winner, Octavio Paz.
Later he exhibited in France, Italy, Japan, the United States and Brazil. During the last period he lived in Paris, his art showed different facets subjugating the eroticism of natural forms, of an appreciable aesthetic and artistic maturity. In 1983 he donated an important set of works of his own, both his own creations and those of others (Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Dalí, Marc Chagall, among others), for the creation of a museum in Zacatecas.
In 1984 he received the National Prize for Sciences and Arts in the area of Fine Arts. On May 23, 1985, he died of a stroke at the age of 62. In the main nave of the Palace of Fine Arts, in Mexico City, a posthumous tribute was paid to him. The first guard of honor was made for him by the President of Mexico, Miguel de la Madrid (1982-1988), the Secretary of Public Education, Miguel González Avelar, and the General Director of Fine Arts, Javier Barros. He was buried in the French Pantheon of San Joaquin.
A year later, his remains were transferred to the city of Zacatecas where he was born, to be deposited in the courtyard of the museum that bears his name, on May 25, 1986.
MANUEL FELGUÉREZ
PLASTIC ARTIST
When his father died prematurely in 1935, the family moved permanently the following year to the Federal District with his maternal grandparents, who owned the then Ideal Theater. Felguérez received his education at the Colegio México of the Marist Brothers and was a member of the Scouts of Mexico, where he met Jorge Ibargüengoitia.
Later he enrolled in the Academy of San Carlos, where he only remained four months before deserting, due to his disagreement with the emphasis placed on the Mexican School of Painting, an outdated subject and too exploited for the artist’s time.
However, he continued his education at La Esmeralda, at the National School of Plastic Arts and at two other Parisian academies thanks to a scholarship from the French government. Upon his return to Mexico, he joins the first movement of national abstract artists that is part of the Rupture Generation.
In his career he has received various distinctions such as the French Government Scholarship (1954), the Second Prize for Painting at the First Triennial of New Delhi, India (1968), the Grand Prize of Honor at the XIII Sao Paulo Biennial, Brazil ( 1975), the Guggenheim Scholarship (1975), the National Prize for Science and Art in the area of Fine Arts, Mexico (1988), and in 1993 he was designated Creator Emeritus by the National System of Art Creators of Mexico.

At the age of 18, he studied painting at the Zacatecano Institute of Fine Arts IZBA. In 1975, he studied drawing, painting and engraving at the Potosino Institute of Fine Arts in San Luis Potosí.
In 1977 he studied engraving at the José Guadalupe Posada Museum in Aguascalientes, the same year he obtained a scholarship from the state of Zacatecas to study at the Siqueiros Workshop in Cuernavaca, Morelos. An eager researcher and tireless reader, he sought to nourish his work with new knowledge acquired in books and travels in the United States and Europe.

uan Francisco Rodríguez Montoya, conocido como Juan Soriano, fue un artista plástico mexicano llamado «El Mozart de la Pintura», debido a que desde temprana edad demostró grandes aptitudes para la creación plástica. Reconocido como uno de los más importantes y prolíficos artistas plásticos mexicanos, tanto en el país como en el extranjero, su obra se puede apreciar en diferentes espacios y colecciones del mundo.
Su carrera inició su internacionalización a partir de 1945, con exposiciones colectivas en Nueva York y Filadelfia, mismos años en los que escribió el libreto de “El pájaro y las doncellas”, junto con Diego de Mesa, y colaboró en la revista “El hijo pródigo”. En 1950 recibió el Primer Premio en el Salón de Invierno y entre 1951 y 1953 ocurrió su estancia en Italia, donde realizó terracotas y cerámicas, así como ilustraciones para el libro homenaje a Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, editado por Juan José Arreola en la colección “Los Presentes”. En 1956, luego de la creación del grupo Poesía en Voz Alta, Soriano diseñó escenografías y vestuarios en compañía de Paz, Leonora Carrington, León Felipe y José Luis Ibáñez, entre otros.
Ese mismo año concretó una larga lista de exposiciones en Europa. En 1957 recibió el Premio José Clemente Orozco, que otorga el gobierno de Jalisco; al año siguiente expuso en el Ateneo Español de México y en la Galería Ruthermore de San Francisco, California y, para 1959, celebró 25 años de quehacer pictórico con una muestra en el Museo de Arte Moderno de México. Ese año también publicó su ensayo “El arte abstracto” y abrió una exposición de cerámicas en la galería de Antonio Souza. En los años siguientes, continuó con su trabajo académico y de diseño de escenografías y vestuarios para Poesía en Voz Alta y montajes dancísticos, tarea que fue reconocida en 1963 con la muestra “Juan Soriano y el Teatro” en la Casa del Lago, mismo año en el que de regreso de Yucatán sufrió un percance automovilístico junto con Juan García Ponce, que le motivó el cuadro “El accidente”. Fue tres años después que celebró una gran exposición de sus esculturas en el Palacio de Bellas Artes y en 1967 ilustró “El bestiario”, de Guillaume Apollinaire.
Dos años más tarde inició una nueva estancia artística en Italia. En 1975, Soriano se trasladó a París, donde entabló amistad con Antonio Saura, Julio Cortázar, Milan Kundera y Valerio Adami, además que se encontró con Pedro Coronel y Alberto Gironella, quienes vivían en la Ciudad Luz. Entonces combinó su residencia entre Francia y México. Un año después ganó el Premio Especial en el VIII Festival Internacional de Pintura de Cagnes-sur-Mer, Francia, y un par de años más tarde obtuvo una beca de apoyo a pintores distinguidos de la Fundación Cultural Televisa; en 1980 elaboró una carpeta con 32 serigrafías para el libro “El único argumento”, con texto de Sergio Pitol. Del Instituto Cultural Cabañas obtuvo en 1984 la Medalla de Oro a la Excelencia, y al año siguiente festejó 50 años de creación con una muestra en el Palacio de Bellas Artes, que posteriormente se montó en otras ciudades del país.
1987 fue un año lleno de reconocimientos: obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Arte en México; Francia le nombró Caballero de las Artes y las Letras y ganó el Premio Jalisco de Arte, además de que realizó su escultura “Toro”, montada en Villahermosa. En 1990 recibió homenajes por sus siete décadas de vida y tres años después fue colocada su escultura monumental “Luna” en el Auditorio Nacional.Posteriormente su exposición “Juan Soriano, 50 años de gráfica”, recorrió varias ciudades de Estados Unidos. Para 1997 el Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, en Madrid, montó una gran retrospectiva de su obra hecha de 1993 a ese año, que incluyó pintura, escultura y gráfica. Al año siguiente apareció “Juan Soriano, niño de mil años”, de Elena Poniatowska.
En el año 2000 fue montada una exposición de 10 esculturas en el zócalo de la Ciudad de México para festejar sus 80 años de vida y el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Internacional Rufino Tamayo le dedicó una muestra-homenaje.Su actividad y exposiciones de su obra no cesaron en los siguientes años, así como tampoco los reconocimientos a su trabajo, lo mismo en México que en otros países; entre los últimos que recibió está la recepción del grado de Oficial de la Legión de Honor por parte del gobierno de Francia en 2004. Ese año se creó la Fundación Juan Soriano y Marek Keller, y al siguiente se realizaron varias actividades con las que celebró sus 85 años de vida. Entre ellas recibió el Premio Velázquez de Artes Plásticas de España y la Medalla Conmemorativa en Oro del Palacio de Bellas Artes. Juan Soriano recibió en enero de 2006 la condecoración Orden al Mérito del gobierno de Polonia y el 10 de febrero siguiente murió en México.

Nacido en 1931, el maestro Rafael Coronel ha sido considerado uno de los representantes más definidos del Nuevo Expresionismo Mexicano. Ha expuesto en los cinco continentes, destacando la VII Bienal de Sao Paulo, en la que obtiene el Premio Córdoba al mejor pintor joven latinoamericano y la I Bienal Internacional de Pintura Figurativa en Osaka, Japón, en la que recibe el Primer Premio (1974). Es el único artista con vida que ha expuesto cuatro veces en el Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes y además de haber recibido varios reconocimientos, su obra forma parte de importantes colecciones y museos alrededor del mundo. Su labor artística le mereció que el Gobierno de México le haya donado un espacio para el museo que lleva su nombre en la ciudad de Zacatecas.
El maestro Coronel representa en su obra la filosofía de la vida con honestidad y humanidad. Hermano menor de Pedro Coronel, Rafael Coronel sintió inclinaciones artísticas desde muy joven.Después de estudiar en la Escuela Nacional de Pintura y Escultura “La Esmeralda”, pronto desarrolló un lenguaje artístico muy singular. Su pintura acude a temas populares, sin embargo no podría decirse de ningún modo que sus tratamientos y soluciones sean producto de lo espontáneo o lo gratuito. La vocación de pintor fue algo que Rafael traía de familia. Su abuelo decoraba iglesias y dibujaba las guirnaldas que adornaban las paredes.
Cuando su padre le platicó que Pedro, su hermano, estaba estudiando pintura en México, se le hizo una de las mayores pérdidas de tiempo y una gran tontería que había pasado en su familia. En aquel tiempo los pintores jóvenes no comían de la pintura; ni los viejos, que además de pintar, tenían que dar clases en las academias.

ALFONSO LÓPEZ MONREAL
ARTISTA PLÁSTICO
Su carrera se origina en el Instituto Zacatecano de Bellas Artes, donde toma clases de dibujo, pintura, grabado y modelado; aquí comienza el aprendizaje y desarrollo de su sensibilidad artística. En su juventud trabajaba en el taller de Pascual Fort, imprimiendo para artistas catalanes como Joan Miró, entre otros. Comenzó a estudiar arquitectura en Guanajuato y abandonó su carrera para iniciar su aventura por el mundo; se fue a San Francisco, California y de ahí a París en donde trabajó durante varios años en talleres de gráfica. Emigró a Barcelona y trabajó con Tapies y Joan Hernández Pijuan, para integrarse al taller Pascual Fort que se convirtió en su segundo padre. Impartió clases en la escuela Massana de Barcelona. Es miembro vitalicio de la Academia de las Artes de Irlanda. Establece un taller de grabado con Albert Reig e imparte clases en la escuela Massana de esa ciudad (1978-1979).
En 1979 el Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes le otorga el Premio Nacional de Arte joven y participa en una exposición colectiva en el palacio de Bellas Artes, misma que se presenta de manera itinerante dentro de la República Mexicana, EE.UU. y España. Cuenta con numerosas exposiciones individuales y colectivas en España, Suiza, Inglaterra, Alemania, Irlanda, Estados Unidos y México. A la par recibe diversos premios y reconocimientos entre los que destacan: Reconocimiento del Consejo de Artes y Premio de la competencia Abierta, Irlanda (1988), Premio Leo Burnett, México (1994), Medalla Goya, Salón de Honor, X Bienal Iberoamericana, México (1996), miembro vitalicio de la Academia de las Artes (2000).
Ha realizado por comisión tanto en México como en Irlanda, murales cerámicos, pinturas murales, vitrales, carteles, obra gráfica y el conjunto escultórico de “Los Conos”, en Zacatecas. Actualmente trabaja en varios proyectos en los que destaca el conjunto escultórico del parque industrial de Fresnillo y los diseños para la restauración de dos edificios en el Centro Histórico de Zacatecas. Su obra forma parte de colecciones públicas de diversos museos, fundaciones e instituciones culturales en México, Irlanda, España y EE.UU.
PEDRO CORONEL
ARTISTA PLÁSTICO
Pintor, escultor, dibujante y grabador. Hermano del pintor zacatecano Rafael Coronel. Estudió pintura y escultura en La Esmeralda (1940-1945). Durante su estancia en París frecuentó los talleres del pintor Victor Brauner y del escultor Constantin Brâncuşi, que influyeron en gran medida su proceso artístico (1945).Su primera exposición individual (1954) fue en la Galería Proteo, Ciudad de México, donde llamó la atención del Premio Nobel mexicano, Octavio Paz.
Más tarde exhibió en Francia, Italia, Japón, Estados Unidos y Brasil.En el último periodo que vivió en París, su arte mostró diferentes facetas subyugando en el erotismo de las formas naturales, de una apreciable madurez estética y artística. En 1983 donó un importante conjunto de obras de su propiedad, tanto creaciones propias como ajenas (Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Dalí, Marc Chagall, entre otros), para la creación de un museo en Zacatecas.
En 1984 recibió el Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes en el área de Bellas Artes.El 23 de mayo de 1985, murió a causa de un derrame cerebral a la edad de 62 años.En la nave mayor del Palacio de Bellas Artes, de la Ciudad de México, se le rindió un homenaje póstumo. Le hicieron la primera guardia de honor el Presidente de México, Miguel de la Madrid (1982-1988), el Secretario de Educación Pública, Miguel González Avelar y el Director General de Bellas Artes, Javier Barros.Fue sepultado en el Panteón Francés de San Joaquín.
Un año más tarde, sus restos fueron trasladados a la ciudad de Zacatecas que le vio nacer, para ser depositados en el patio del museo que lleva su nombre, el día 25 de mayo de 1986.
MANUEL FELGUÉREZ
ARTISTA PLÁSTICO
Al morir prematuramente su padre en 1935, la familia se mudó al año siguiente y de forma permanente al Distrito Federal con los abuelos maternos, quienes eran propietarios del entonces Teatro Ideal. Felguérez recibió su educación en el Colegio México de los hermanos maristas y fue miembro de los Scouts de México, donde conoció a Jorge Ibargüengoitia.
Posteriormente se inscribió en la Academia de San Carlos, donde sólo permaneció cuatro meses antes de desertar, por su desacuerdo en el énfasis que se hacía de la Escuela Mexicana de Pintura, tema caduco y demasiado explotado para la época del artista.
Sin embargo continuó su educación en La Esmeralda, en la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas y en otras dos academias parisinas gracias a una beca del gobierno francés. A su regreso a México, se une al primer movimiento de artistas abstractos nacionales que forma parte de la Generación de la Ruptura.
En su trayectoria ha recibido distintas distinciones como la Beca del Gobierno Francés (1954), el Segundo Premio de Pintura en la Primera Trienal de Nueva Delhi, India (1968), el Gran Premio de Honor en la XIII Bienal de Sao Paulo, Brasil (1975), la Beca Guggenheim (1975), el Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Arte en el área de Bellas Artes, México (1988), y en 1993 fue designado Creador Emérito por el Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte de México.
ALEJANDRO NAVA
ARTISTA PLÁSTICO
A los 18 años estudió pintura en el Instituto Zacatecano de Bellas Artes IZBA. En 1975, estudió dibujo, pintura y grabado en el Instituto Potosino de Bellas Artes de San Luis Potosí.
En 1977 estudió grabado en el Museo José Guadalupe Posada de Aguascalientes, mismo año en que obtuvo una beca del estado de Zacatecas para realizar estudios en el Taller Siqueiros de Cuernavaca, Morelos. Ansioso investigador e incansable lector, buscó nutrir sus trabajos con nuevos conocimientos adquiridos en libros y viajes por Estados Unidos y Europa.
JAVIER MARIN
ARTISTA PLÁSTICO
Artista Mexicano, nacido en Uruapan, Michoacán (1962), con una trayectoria activa que rebasa los treinta años, ha expuesto de manera individual en más de noventa ocasiones y ha participado en más de doscientas muestras colectivas en México, Estados Unidos y Canadá, así como en varios países de Centroamérica, Sudamérica, Asia y Europa.
El trabajo de Javier Marín gira en torno al ser humano integral, valiéndose del análisis del proceso creativo a partir de la construcción y la de-construcción de las formas tridimensionales, tomando la escultura y ahora incluyendo el dibujo y la fotografía como disciplinas centrales.
Algunas de sus muestras se han llevado a cabo en espacios como Place du Louvre, en París (2018), The San Diego Museum of Art en California (2018), el MUDEC Museo delle Culture en Milán (2018), la Pinacoteca Comunale Casa Rusca, en Locarno, Suiza (2016), el Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma Testaccio, en Roma (2013-2014), Les Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, en Bruselas (2010), el Museo di Palazzo Reale, en Milán (2008-2009), el Bass Museum of Art, en Miami Beach (2006-2007), el Museo Colonial y el Museo Santa Clara, ambos en Bogotá (2006), el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca (2006), el Museo Amparo, en Puebla (2005), el Espace Pierre Cardin, en París (2000), el Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes, en la Ciudad de México (1996), el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, México (1993) y el Museo de Arte Álvar y Carmen T. de Carrillo Gil, en la Ciudad de México (1990), entre muchos otros. Como revisión a los treinta años de su trayectoria se presentó la exposición Corpus Terra en el Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso y en el Palacio de Iturbide, en la Ciudad de México (2015-2016).
Su obra forma parte de importantes colecciones públicas y privadas de México y el extranjero, entre ellas: la del Museo de Arte Moderno y la del Museo de la Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público, en la Ciudad de México, la del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, la del Museo del Barro, en Caracas, la del Santa Barbara Museum of Art, en California, la del Museum of Fine Arts, en Boston, la del Boca Raton Museum of Art y la del Latin American Museum, en Florida, la Colección Blake-Purnell, en Nueva York, la Colección Costantini del Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, la Colección Ersel, en Turín, y la Colección de Arte del Príncipe de Mónaco.
Asimismo, ha realizado proyectos y muestras en espacios públicos, tales como la Plaza Lange Voorhout, en La Haya (2010), la Piazza del Duomo, Chiesa e Chiostro di Sant’Agostino, en Pietrasanta (2008), la Casa de América, en Madrid (2007), el Convento de San Francisco de Asís, en La Habana (2006), la Plaza Juárez y el Ex Templo de Corpus Christi, en la Ciudad de México (2005), la Iglesia de Santa Catarina, en Lituania (2003), el Espace Bellevue, en Biarritz (2001), y la Casa de América en Madrid, en cuya fachada principal creó la pieza monumental Chalchihuites (2008).
Ha sido invitado a destacados eventos internacionales, como la Exhibition for the World Art Treasures, exposición de apertura del China Art Museum, Shanghai (2012); además, su obra ha sido exhibida en dos ocasiones durante la Bienal de Venecia: en Larga Ascensione al ingreso de la Piazza de San Marco, en la edición 49 (2001), y en la Sala Santo Tommaso, Campo dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, en la edición 50 (2003).
Javier Marín ha recibido diversos premios y distinciones, entre los que destacan el Primer Premio en la Tercera Bienal Internacional de Beijing (2008) y la realización por concurso del retablo mayor y el presbiterio de la Catedral Basílica de Zacatecas (2010). En reconocimiento a su exposición itinerante De 3 en 3, la cual recorrió siete ciudades europeas (Pietrasanta, Milán, La Haya, Bruselas, La Baule-Escoublac, Luxemburgo y Roma), la Reina de Holanda le otorgó el título de Caballero de la Orden de Orange-Nassau (2009).
